WELCOME
Me

And thanks for stopping by to check me out. If you’re in the market for a photographer, I’m sure you’ve discovered the options are abundant to the point of being overwhelming. While many couples choose their photographer solely on the images they see, the reality is that those beautiful photos are the result of two more important, yet very familiar factors: chemistry and trust. So to help give you a sense of who I am and how we’d get along, here’s a bit more about me.

First, I married young but I married up. My wife and I have been on an 11+ year journey together and it’s this experience that has made the biggest impact on me as a person and an artist. Together, we created a daughter who is the center of our universe. Her imagination and sense of humor keeps me young at heart though she’s who I blame for my gray hairs and smile wrinkles. As a family, our lives revolve around good food, good friends, and a love of exploring this fascinating planet together. Seattle is where we call home and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

I began documenting weddings in 2010 and have been shooting full-time ever since. When I started, I thought I’d be lucky if anyone were to hire me. Little did I know that this job would take me to places well beyond my city limits and would connect me with people who started as clients and quickly became good friends. It’s been a crazy ride with a steep learning curve but I couldn’t be more grateful to do this for a living and I hope that shows through my images.

xoxo.

GREATEST HITS
WHY I DO THIS

The obvious answer for any photographer but what do I consider to be a “great” image? For one, it doesn’t require an epic backdrop with a couple who could model full-time if they chose. Don’t get me wrong, if this is you and you’re having a wedding in the mountains of New Zealand, yeah, I’ll shoot the hell out of it. But great images are more than just the obvious stuff anyone can understand. A really great image, in my humblest of opinions, is one that makes you feel something, whether you’re part of the day or not. What goes into making that image is more than just technical perfection and a great composition. It requires a keen sense of observation with the ability to know where to be when that priceless moment happens. When I’m in the zone, that’s what I’m looking for so don’t be surprised when I sprint across the room with a camera to my face to get THE shot..

This part is huge for me and is why most people invest in my work. A great image can stand on its own, but having context around the image is where the tears of joy happen. My goal is to give you something that really takes you back and I can’t do that with a single image. Truth is, I rarely feel fulfilled with my work until I put a slideshow together. That’s when I see all the pieces of the day come together to make something beautiful. If you want to see what that looks like, please take some time to dig through my slideshows. Chances are, your wedding won’t look much like the ones I’ve already shot, but hopefully they give you a sense of being there with these couples.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not well versed in wedding trends/fashions. I don’t know what flowers are what, and probably have no idea who made your dress or shoes. But I feel that’s a good thing. I will never step into a job and form a judgement because your details aren’t wedding blog worthy. I don’t create work for them, I create it for you. Some of my best work has been at weddings with the simplest of decor. Why? Because I always focus on the people. Don’t get me wrong, I love the context that great details provide, but I’ve found by taking this approach, every wedding truly looks different because people are always different. No matter how hard you try, the combination of chemistry you bring together for this one day can never be replicated. And since people are the greatest variable, I never find myself bored with what I’m shooting. I love people, I love that they’re all here to celebrate you, and chances are you feel the same..

AKA: KEEP IT SIMPLE SHODA

Having shot hundreds of weddings, I’ve found the best approach is the simplest one and that goes from beginning to end with me. To start, you’ll find my pricing info below, no need to ask. I do all my initial meetings online via Skype/FaceTime, so no need for pants. Payment, contracts, delivery, all handled online. If you want help with any part of the planning process, I’m here for you. On the day-of, my goal is to keep you in the moment, so I’ll get hands-on when needed, but more often than not, I’ll leave you all to enjoy yourselves while I work. Hopefully you find that working with me is fun and easy because that’s how wedding photography should be.

PRICING GUIDE
CRUNCH THE NUMBERS
F.A.Q.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?

I get asked that a lot and it’s kind of a hard one to answer. I guess the easy answer is that I mostly shoot with a documentary approach mixed with creative portraiture, but that pretty much describes 99% of photographers nowadays. Really, I just shoot in a way that embodies the characteristics that I love about good photography. I love clean images, I love creative compositions, I love incorporating environments and landscapes into shots, but I also love very close, intimate portraits. I love good light, but also the challenge of working to make bad light good. I love when chemistry transcends the frame, and when a couple really feels like themselves in front of the camera. To me, that’s really the golden rule because I want you to see you in these photos 10 years from now, not some generic version of yourselves that was configured by me.

WHAT USAGE RIGHTS DO WE HAVE WITH OUR IMAGES?

If you purchase the print-resolution collection, you can pretty much do anything with them short of selling or licensing them for use without my approval. I just want you to have something physical from the day so feel free to make prints or photo books on your own.

IS SALES TAX INCLUDED IN YOUR PRICING?

No. I’m only obligated to collect sales tax from Washington State residents, and the rate is based on the city in which you live.

WHAT GEAR DO YOU USE?

I shoot a mix of Canon and Sony cameras with an assortment of pro-grade lenses.

DO YOU TRAVEL?

Absolutely. For domestic travel, I keep things simple by charging two flat rates for weddings taking place outside of Seattle. You can find details and pricing in my pricing guide above. All international weddings are quoted on an individual basis.

CAN WE COVER YOUR TRAVEL TO AVOID THE FEE?

My goal isn’t to make money on travel, it’s to make things easier for the both of us. I moved to flat travel rates to 1) help reduce the burden of extra planning on your part, 2) keep things simple so there are no post-event invoices for unexpected costs, 3) allow myself the flexibility to book travel closer to the wedding date (avoiding any change/cancellation fees for changes in plans). If you have access to deeply discounted travel, I’m happy to discuss more options but with most weddings, you’ll find all the travel costs combined are very close to my fee (and I give you incentives to help offset said fee).

WHY DON’T YOU INCLUDE THE PRINT-RESOLUTION FILES WITH YOUR COVERAGE?

I only provide web-resolution collections with my coverage to help keep costs down. You’re currently putting down deposits with other essential vendors, so I feel there’s no need to be paying for something that you won’t see until weeks after the wedding right? And even then, you have no obligation to buy the high-res collection. I offer the high-res files for sale individually so you have the option to buy a few to print while saving the others for online use. If you want to make a lot of prints, or create your own wedding album using the printer of your choice, then you’ll want to consider purchasing the high-res collection. Also, I include this collection with any album purchase free of charge.

IS AN ENGAGEMENT SESSION NECCESSARY?

No, but when I start working on the day of your wedding, I want you to be at ease with my presence. An engagement session gives us the opportunity to get to know one another better, it lets you feel what it’s like to have me all up in your business, and you end up with some pretty photos to use as well. Ultimately, I push these because I need your trust in order to do my best work on your wedding day, and that’s a lot easier to gain when you’ve actually been in front of my lens.

ARE YOU OPEN TO OUR SHOT IDEAS?

Of course! As long as they doesn’t interfere with the chemistry between the two of you, I’m all about it. This is a collaborative process, I’m happy to work together on ideas. However, what I don’t recommend is basing your expectations on a Pinterest board. While Pinterest is a great tool for ideas and inspiration, it should never be treated as a blueprint to your day/session as it’s impossible to replicate the exact light/chemistry/etc in a collection of photos taken by multiple extraordinary photographers. If you do have a board you’d like to share, I’d love to see it just to get an idea of what aesthetic qualities you are into.

HOW LONG DOES IT  TAKE TO SEE OUR PHOTOS?

My delivery window for weddings is 6-8 weeks. This timeframe lets me get your collection edited properly, your gallery built, and your slideshow created.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BOOK MY DATE?

A 50% retainer, and you only have to decide on a coverage package to lock in your date. All the other stuff can be added up to two weeks out from the wedding, and any products (albums, prints, etc.) can be purchased afterwards.

DO WE NEED A SECOND SHOOTER?

I always say it never hurts to have an additional set of eyes on the scene but there are definitely cases where it’s going to dramatically change the coverage of the day. If you’re having a wedding with a large guest count (200+), or a lot going on (events or logistics), it’s probably wise to have a second photographer there with me. I can get a lot done on my own but there’s situations where I can’t be in two places at once (typically getting ready photos). The people that shoot alongside me are incredibly talented and do work that will compliment my own in a way that seamlessly tells your story. If you’re still unsure, we can talk about your wedding and see what will work best for you.

CAN WE MEET WITH YOU?

Choosing a wedding photographer can be an intensive task with emails, consults, etc. I like to start things off with a phone/skype chat just to address any basic questions you have and if you feel like we’re a good fit from there, I’m happy to meet in person (given you live around Seattle). This gets a bit trickier during wedding season but I want you guys to feel confident in hiring me so I’m down to do whatever I can to make that happen.

DO YOU SHOOT FAMILY SESSIONS?

Absolutely! I love shooting families with the same relaxed, documentary approach I use for my other work. Pricing is the same as an engagement session and includes the same 1-2 hours of shooting, online gallery with web downloads, and online slideshow.

WHAT FORMS OF PAYMENT DO YOU ACCEPT?

Cash, check, Paypal, and all major credit cards.
